If asked what is the greatest, single source of gun violence in this country, what would be your answer? Failed gun control laws, lack of respect for police officers, drug-crazed criminals, liberals? The answer may surprise some, especially those who suffer from a friendly police fantasy.
There are certainly multiple contributing factors to be found behind the violence in our society, via guns and otherwise. But, a major factor many may miss is, in fact, our government-backed enforcers of the law. Police, cops, agents, all those carrying a badge and a gun. In fact, Cops Kill Far More Citizens Than Mass Shooters Do.
There is No Violence Like Police Violence
Despite whatever good intentions individual officers or departments may have, a creeping police state and growing militarization have all but guaranteed a strained, antagonistic relationship between them and those they claim to serve. Examples are too numerous and too typical to prove otherwise. Pick any jurisdiction and examine the trend in policing over the past several decades.
We see violent abuse in many guises, killing pets, shooting residents, many innocent. Between impotent bureaucracies, sympathetic courts and opportunistic agencies, the people have little chance against the dominance that is law enforcement. The attitude, so abrasive and pervasive, spreads from the top down, from federal agencies throughout state and local departments.
Want a few examples? These are just the tip of the iceberg.
In Texas, an officer is sent to do a welfare check on a woman. Upon arriving, he aims to shoot her dog and kills her instead. In Chicago, a SWAT team shoots a child in the knee while sitting on his bed. In St. Louis, another SWAT team swarms into a home and kills a woman’s dog – over an unpaid gas bill. A medical-assist alarm sent police to a home in South Carolina. They shot the older homeowner through the front door. A SWAT team had no problems throwing a flashbang grenade into a room with a 68 year old woman and a 2 year old child. With alarming regularity, unarmed men, women, children and even pets are being gunned down by twitchy, hyper-sensitive, easily-spooked police officers who shoot first and ask questions later, and all the government does is shrug.
