A few months back we took a look at the state of popular culture. If you haven’t done so, we suggest you check out our thoughts and the video there. It is so easy to become drawn in to whatever the specific issue of the day is that we lose sight of the bigger picture. Sometimes, it is good to pause and ponder the overall landscape that is our culture.
How Dare You Be Polite
The remaining pockets of good notwithstanding, there is much to cause concern for the general direction our country is traveling. As a populace, we seem to be getting not only more ignorant but dumber, two different but related conditions. How Stupid Can We Get?
What is worse is the Deadly Combination of Ignorance Plus Arrogance. The former is due to varied forces including our public school system along with other factors. These contribute to often deliberate attempts at indoctrinating our younger generations to serve political and other purposes.
The latter stems from social engineering, popular media, breakdown in traditional values and related factors that have shaped the culture in recent years. It finds its manifestation in the narcissism and other antisocial attitudes and behaviors both online and off.
A recent social media post described the experience of someone who witnessed an encounter at a restaurant. As an older gentleman reached the door, he noticed a younger woman approaching behind him. Holding the door open to allow her to enter first, she instantly and loudly excoriated him for such brutish behavior.
She harshly let him know in no uncertain terms how much she did not appreciate him performing such an inappropriate act. She could open her own $%*$ door. That a thirty-something woman would act this way at all is sad. That she would do so due to her own presumptions reveals how vacuous have become the “values” of popular culture. That the gentleman would do what he did for anyone, completely irrelevant of gender or race or anything else, apparently did not even occur to her. Common decency is now a hostile threat to fear and combat. It is so easy to become drawn in to whatever the specific issue of the day is that we lose sight of the bigger picture. If You Don’t See the Problems, You May Not Be Paying Attention
This narrative is reminiscent of a larger attitude that is more widespread and that is the Hypocrisy in Today’s Culture. We see this everywhere. Many call for tolerance while exhibiting precisely the opposite behavior. They scream for a small business owner to be both heavily persecuted and prosecuted for not baking a cake. But, then they proudly crow how they do not, or would not, perform a service for those they don’t like. The hypocrisy is staggering.
Perhaps not unrelated is the Orwellian corruption of language, often intentional as a means of serving political and social agendas. Speaking of political, we are steadily losing sight of anything in our everyday affairs that is not being politicized.
This is not healthy, for the individual nor for society at large. These trends have transpired over time, a gradual but steady deterioration in the fabric of our culture. We can change that, repair the damage, turn things toward a healthier direction. But, that will also take some time, not to mention effort and commitment.
Some will say they see no problem with the direction things are moving, they like it. At some point they may realize how wrong they are but by then it may be too late. For those who recognize the cultural issues of concern, we encourage you to remain vigilant in the fight to better society. For those who don’t, we encourage you to take a closer look.
